The John Paul Chapter NSDAR in Madison, Indiana, was formed in 1902 and is an active service organization dedicated to historic preservation, education, and patriotism. DAR members come from a variety of backgrounds and interests, but all share a common bond of having an ancestor who helped contribute to securing the independence of the United States of America.

John Paul Chapter annually presents the DAR Good Citizen award to Jefferson County high school essay scholarship winners exemplifying the qualities of dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism. They also sponsor a grade school American History Essay Contest, honor local women, past and present, with the Women in American History award, and support veteran services throughout the year.

In the early 1900s, the chapter transformed the neglected 1823 Old City Cemetery into John Paul Park (500 W. 3rd St.), named after chapter namesake, town founder, and Revolutionary War soldier, Colonel John Paul. Today the chapter conducts a volunteer park cleanup twice a year, continuing the legacy of environmental stewardship and community involvement that has been at the heart of DAR’s values for over a century. They are actively planning a re-envisioning project of the park in partnership with the City of Madison.

As part of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, local chapters invite women over 18 who can prove lineal descent from a Patriot of the American Revolution to join this patriotic organization.
